“Find a way.” The mantra of any person who ever wanted to accomplish something greater than himself. No matter the insurmountable odds, the treacherous landscape, the uncertain road ahead, if the desire and passion is great enough, you will find a way. These are words to live by. But how do you go about achieving that courage to push forward no matter what? How do you know that you’ve truly given it your all in pursuit of finding a way to accomplish your dreams? For the answer, we can turn to Nick Symmonds.
Coming out of a NCAA Division III school, Nick found himself on both the 2008 and 2012 US Olympic teams, a feat that is rarely heard of, as your top tier athletes generally come from institutions with Division I athletic programs. However, Nick overcame those odds that seemed to be stacked against him and went on to win 7 NCAA DIII titles, 6 USATF Outdoor National titles, and came in 5th place in the finals of the 800-meter run in the 2012 London Games; clocking in a personal best time of 1:42.95.
While still pursuing his athletic career, Nick became victorious in yet another area of life that peaked his interest. Utilizing his knowledge and experience cultivated as a track and field athlete, Nick co-founded his own company, Run Gum. Nick saw a need in the energy drink market and wanted to offer a substitute for products that might weigh a person down. Having an option like gum, rather than the conventional energy drink or bar, would allow a person to better maximize their workout.
With his background in biochemistry, Nick created this very piece of gum and branded it on the market as Run Gum, finding a way to turn himself into a successful entrepreneur.
He is a person who seems to always find a way to succeed and bring his best self to the track and to the office. I want to thank him for taking time out of his day to speak with me about his journey, and I hope that you enjoy my interview with Nick Symmonds.
